Truth be told, there aren't a whole lot of requirements to get on the podcast, in terms of equipment and software. Here's everything you'll need:

A Microphone: Any mic you can plop into the line-in jack of your computer will do, but the better the mic, the better you'll sound. USB mics are preferable because the signal is digital, and thus less prone to interference, and noise-canceling is also a plus. In a pinch, though, any piece of shit mic will do, as long as we can understand you.
Headphones: The last thing we want is to hear echoes of us talking over your speakers, so headphones are a must. (You'll just have to deal with your roommates thinking you're crazy.) You don't need a headset with a mic (and it might not even be optimal since a headset with a good mic can be pricey). Unlike a mic, headphone quality is totally irrelevant to the podcast.
Skype: Skype is a free piece of software that allows you to call other users with a quality audio connection (it also lets you call phones for a fee, but we don't need that feature). It also allows free conference calls and voice chat rooms, which is what we'll be using for the podcasts.
Patience: Getting all this shit worked out, getting everyone's audio levels matched, etc., will take time. You have to be willing to put up with slow-going until we know what the hell we're doing.
A Lack of Shame: While in all likelihood no one will ever hear these podcasts outside of the Dowdnet readership, you're still putting your voice and opinions out there for whoever to listen to, criticize, and mock. I'm not making any promises about the podcasts being private, so be sure you know what you're getting into.
And that's it. We also need software to record the podcast, which I'll take care of, and software to edit it, which I can also handle because I have a pimp sound card with nice software. You guys don't need to go out and buy $30 mics to be on the podcast or anything, but if it catches on and becomes a regular thing it would be nice to have some decent equipment - we'll see how it goes with what we've got for now.

I don’t know if this would affect anyone but myself, but I’d like to point out that the $20 USB Logitech Microphone that comes packaged with the karaoke revolution games works just fine and dandy on your computer. I just plugged it into one of my free slots and windows picked it up right away without having to search for any specific drivers, or do any crazy settings changes.

What about profanities? What is the rating of this thing? G, PG, R, NC-17(This one is my preference)?

I don't really know, to be honest. I mean, there's no reason to worry about it - I seriously doubt that even if we do attract more listeners somehow, they'll be really young or something - but I'm not sure a lot of cursing and whatnot makes for a good show. I was planning to (try) to be on my best behavior, personally.

BTW, if I can get four people together at any point, we're so recording a podcast. Although I have to test Skype and the recording first. Any volunteers to help me with that?
